How do you find out which schools are best for sports and activities?

Nearly all private boarding schools place a great deal of emphasis on sport and physical activities because of the beneficial effects on fitness, health, self confidence and team-building skills. A high proportion have sizeable campuses with excellent and varied sports facilities. Most schools will insist that pupils engage in physical activity for at least two half days per week. Many boarding schools like to see pupils getting involved in competitive team activities on Saturday afternoons. Most schools will insist pupils at least try to participate in activities of their own choice, even if they don't excel at them.

The majority of schools will have termly sports and these are usually rugby or football, hockey and cricket for boys, and hockey, netball and tennis for girls. Then virtually all will have swimming and athletics with all weather pitches/courts. If this does not include your child’s favourites we can find schools with the following:-

Archery Baseball Basketball

Badminton

Caving Cross country Cycling

Dance

Equestrianism

Fencing Fives Gymnastics

Golf

Judo Lacrosse Martial Arts
Mountaineering

Polo

Sailing

Some schools offer specialist coaching, and facilities to enable a child to train at a high level in a particular area. This can offer huge advantages to a child who participates in sport for many hours a week as the school will be able to incorporate their training programme with their general academic education.

  • Football Academy linked to Premier League Clubs
  • Golf Academy – with golf pros and own course
  • Tennis Academy linked to Lawn Tennis Association
  • Equestrian Centre with stables on site

Entry to a specialist academy within a school is usually based on practical trials and/or recommendations from a child’s current coach.

Schools can be very competitive to win National Schools tournaments. Children with outstanding sporting ability may be offered scholarships.

We get many requests for school placements where the child is exceptionally talented at a particular sport. Give us a try and we will try to match your child to a suitably strong school in their sport / activity.

Here are just a few of the requests we have had

  1. My son is a champion high jumper. Where can he get coaching to further his ability?
  2. My daughters are in the Swiss National Junior Team. Which schools have 50 metre pools and Olympic standard coaches?
  3. My son is absolutely mad about football and would like to play professionally?
  4. My daughter is superb at eventing. Where can she take her own horse to a school with stables?

Note also that many schools do not offer Physical Education as an A Level subject. However some schools offer Sports Science as an A Level or BTEC for those who want to follow a career in sports training or coaching.
